What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum tissue caused by plaque buildup below the gumline. Irritation of the gums occurs as bacteria-laden plaque builds in the periodontal pockets. The gums then turn red, inflamed, and become unhealthy.

We want to intervene as quickly as possible to prevent complications from developing. Some of the stages of periodontal disease include:

Gingivitis: The first stage of periodontal disease typically causes bad breath, bleeding gums, and mild inflammation.

Periodontitis: The second stage results as the periodontal pockets grow deeper, causing the gums to detach from your teeth.

Advanced Periodontitis: The third stage occurs when the infection spreads beneath the gums and causes painful abscesses, tooth loss, and systemic infections.

When you come to our office for care, Dr. Thompson, will find the best treatment for your needs. Through a personalized care plan, it’s possible to halt the progression of periodontal disease and help your gums heal.

What Are the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

The symptoms of this condition can vary depending on the stage, but some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Gums bleeding while brushing your teeth
  • Swelling and tenderness of the gum tissues
  • Pain while chewing
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Changes in your bite
  • Visible periodontal pockets

At Pine Creek Dental, we will customize your treatment options to address your concerns.

What Is The Treatment Process?

The type of gum disease treatment you will need depends on the stage of the condition and the severity of your symptoms. We will always start by brushing and flossing your teeth thoroughly, removing all debris.

If you have extensive plaque buildup around your gum line, we may also recommend scaling and route planning. We want to clean the gum line thoroughly to remove any bacteria, plaque, and tartar that might be present. This is important for stopping irritation and inflammation, giving your gum tissue a chance to heal.

If we believe you need further treatment, we will discuss other options with you. We will keep you as comfortable as possible during your visit to our office, and we have plenty of steps we can take to minimize potential discomfort and anxiety. Let us work with you to help you relax  while we provide the dental care you need.

Again, it is important to address periodontal disease as quickly as possible, so please give us a call to schedule an appointment at (719) 268-9400.

I have been going to Pine Creek Dental for years. The staff is amazing! They are great at explaining everything as they go. I am so glad I found this place after my previous dentist retired. I will not go anywhere else.
